In a significant development following the murder of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique, reports indicate that a directive from the Union Home Ministry is obstructing the Mumbai Police from obtaining custody of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. According to India Today, Bishnoi, who is currently incarcerated in Sabarmati jail, Gujarat, is linked to the October 12 shooting of Siddique, a prominent political figure and former Maharashtra minister.

Baba Siddique was tragically shot outside his son, Zeeshan Siddique’s office in Bandra on the evening of Dussehra, just as he was about to enter his vehicle around 9:30 PM. Despite being rushed to Lilavati Hospital, Siddique succumbed to his injuries two hours after the shooting, prompting widespread outrage and concern over political safety in the region.

The alleged involvement of the Bishnoi gang in Siddique’s murder has been confirmed, with three suspects already arrested and a search underway for a fourth individual. However, the investigation’s progress has been stymied by the Home Ministry’s order, which prohibits Bishnoi’s transfer from Sabarmati prison. Initially set to remain in effect until August 2024, reports suggest that this deadline has now been extended, further complicating the police’s efforts to interrogate him.

Lawrence Bishnoi is notorious for his extensive criminal record, with numerous cases registered against him, including serious offenses related to organized crime and cross-border smuggling. He has previously claimed responsibility for the high-profile murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala, showcasing the gang’s brazen disregard for law and order.

The Mumbai Police’s investigation into Siddique’s murder is anticipated to extend beyond the state, requiring cooperation from police departments across India as they seek to dismantle the network surrounding Bishnoi and his gang.

As the community mourns the loss of Baba Siddique, questions continue to arise regarding political safety and the influence of organized crime within Maharashtra. The unfolding investigation will undoubtedly be closely monitored by both the public and political leaders in the coming days.
