Thane: As the monsoon season approaches, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Thane District Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde has instructed all departments to act swiftly and decisively to safeguard the public. In a high-level review meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority on Friday, Shinde directed officials to complete all preparations — from clearing drains and fixing potholes to removing dangerous hoardings and securing open manholes.

“The development of the common man is the priority of the state government,” Shinde asserted during the meeting.

The directives come amid concerns over flooding, accidents, and infrastructure-related risks that typically escalate during the monsoon in urban areas like Thane. The Deputy CM emphasized inter-agency coordination, especially between the Railways and municipal corporations, for efficient water drainage systems.

According to an official release issued Saturday, Shinde also stressed the importance of:

  • Structural audits of buildings at risk,
  • Rapid pothole repairs,
  • Tree pruning to prevent falling incidents,
  • Readiness of temporary shelters and alternative arrangements for flood-affected or isolated villages,
  • Special focus on dilapidated school buildings.

He also instructed that NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams in Thane and Kalyan remain deployed in the district till September and called for volunteer teams equipped with swimmers to be on standby, especially in low-lying flood-prone areas.
