Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sent a powerful message of defiance in the face of Washington’s aggressive tariff hike, declaring that India would never allow its small entrepreneurs, farmers, and animal keepers to suffer under foreign pressure. His remarks, seen as a veiled response to US President Donald Trump’s 50% tariff on Indian imports, electrified a massive gathering in Ahmedabad.

“Today in the world, everyone is busy doing politics based on economic interests. From this land of Ahmedabad, I will tell my small entrepreneurs, my small shopkeeper brothers and sisters, my farmer brothers and sisters, my animal husbandry brothers and sisters and I am saying this on the land of Gandhi. Be it the small entrepreneurs, farmers, or animal keepers of my country, for everyone, I promise you again and again, your interests are paramount for Modi. My government will never let any harm come to the small entrepreneurs, farmers, and animal keepers. No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand,” Modi thundered, underscoring that Atmanirbhar Bharat had drawn its strength from two decades of groundwork in Gujarat.

In a fiery expansion of his address, Modi invoked Operation Sindoor, launched after the Pahalgam terror attack, as a testament to India’s military might and unshakable willpower. “The world has seen how India avenged Pahalgam. They wiped them out in just 22 minutes. We went hundreds of kilometres inside and attacked the centre of terrorism,” he declared, making clear that India would not spare terrorists or their backers.

Striking a contrast with the past, Modi accused previous governments of misusing Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy while ignoring his core principles. “Charkhadhari Mohan, our revered Bapu, had shown the path of prosperity through Swadeshi. But the party that enjoyed power for decades in his name crushed his soul. You would not have heard the words Swachhata or Swadeshi from their mouths, though they run vehicles in Gandhi’s name day and night,” he said, adding that today’s Gujarat symbolised peace, industry, and manufacturing strength after decades of unrest and curfews.
