Mumbai: Mumbai Metro’s announcement of a 25% concession for persons with disabilities was expected to bring relief. Instead, it has triggered disbelief and anger. Because the fine print says it all — the discount is available only to iPhone users.
For thousands of disabled commuters who rely on affordable Android phones — cheaper, more accessible, and overwhelmingly more common — the message felt like an insult, not assistance.
“Discounts only for iPhones? An iPhone itself costs over a lakh rupees. How many disabled people can afford that? What exactly is the Metro administration thinking?” senior journalist and disability rights activist Deepak Kaitke asked bluntly.
Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) implemented the 25% concession from November 23, accessible through the MetroConnect-3 mobile app. But MMRC’s PRO Vaidehi More confirmed that the feature is available only on iOS, while the Android update is “stuck in Google Play Store approval.”
In simple terms — the majority of disabled commuters remain excluded, waiting for a technical clearance that should have preceded the announcement.
“Before declaring benefits, the administration should understand economic realities. Most disabled persons depend on Android. If there was a technical issue, they should have fixed it first and then made the announcement,” Kaitke said, calling the rollout insensitive and poorly planned.
Kaitke also pointed out that many accessibility facilities inside Metro stations and trains — ramps, Braille signage, audio alerts, priority entry — remain inadequate. “Many disabled commuters need an escort just to complete the journey. Under these conditions, the demand should not be for 25%, but 100% free travel for persons with disabilities.”
This demand has now reached the government. Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, strongly urging the state to make Mumbai Metro travel completely free for disabled commuters, considering their mobility challenges, limited income and dependence on public transport.
For now, the Metro’s concession stands as a half-baked relief — congratulatory messages floated online, but actual benefit went only to iPhone users, leaving the wider disabled community waiting, confused and disappointed.
Because the rights of disabled citizens are not a matter of technology —
they are a matter of sensitivity, dignity and equal access.
