New Delhi: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to face scrutiny from the Indian Parliamentary committee on Communications and Information Technology following his recent comments about the 2024 Indian elections. Dr. Nishikant Dubey, the committee’s chairman, announced plans to summon Zuckerberg in response to his remarks regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Indian government’s electoral prospects.
Zuckerberg’s statement, made during an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, suggested that the incumbent Indian government lost the 2024 elections due to its handling of the pandemic. He claimed that many governments, including India’s, faced significant challenges during the pandemic, which contributed to a global decline in trust towards incumbents.
Dr. Dubey expressed concerns that Zuckerberg’s remarks could spread misinformation, potentially damaging the reputation of India’s democratic process. He emphasized that such statements should not go unaddressed, urging Meta to apologize to both the Indian Parliament and the people for the “factually incorrect” claim.
The controversy intensified after Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw criticized Zuckerberg’s comments, labeling them as misleading. Vaishnaw took to Facebook to highlight the need for accuracy in discussing sensitive political matters, stressing the importance of upholding facts and credibility when speaking about elections.
