MBMC curbs Covid-19 cases in slum by relocating entire population in buildings; can it be replicated in Dharavi slum?

Thane: Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation has taken a major step by rehabilitating entire lot of slum dwellers into a building. The sudden rise of Covid-19 cases in Bhayander’s Ganesh chawl was a major concern for MBMC commissioner Chandrakant Dange, so to curb the coronavirus cases the MBMC administration shifted around 460 people in a building and gave flats depending upon the size of the family.

“To curb the coronavirus cases in Ganesh chawl we have shifted 460 people in a building and given flats as per the family members, if the family is small we have given them one flat or if the family is big we have given them two rooms.” said MBMC Commissioner Chandrakant Dange said to thenews21.

MBMC commissioner emphasized that main reason for the spread of the virus is common toilets so to break this chain they had to shift them, “Common toilets in slums are the main reason for corona spread, so to break this chain we relocated these people in a building and now every family have their private toilet,” concluded Chandrakant Dange.

Currently, in Dharavi there are more than 1000 cases of Corona positives and the main reason for Coronavirus spread is common toilets. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is leaving no stone unturned to curb it. But the MBMC, on the other hand, has implemented a new idea and have achieved the desired result.
