Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Tuesday strongly criticized the Pushkar Singh Dhami-led Uttarakhand government for renaming 11 places across the state, accusing the ruling BJP of using hatred and discrimination to divert attention from its failures.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mayawati compared the move to similar actions taken by the Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh governments, arguing that changing place names is not governance but a dangerous political tactic. “Like the SP government of UP, the tendency of BJP governments of Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and UP to change the names of districts, cities, and institutions etc. is not governance of the rule of law but a very worrying narrow politics to cover up their failures on the basis of hatred and discrimination,” Mayawati wrote. Contrasting this with BSP’s governance in undivided Uttar Pradesh, she stated that during her four terms in power (1995-2012), the party focused on good governance by introducing new welfare schemes, districts, tehsils, hospitals, and universities—without changing existing place names. “While BSP was in power for four terms from 1995 in undivided Uttar Pradesh to 2012, keeping good governance in mind, many new welfare schemes and districts, tehsils, hospitals, universities etc. were created with new names, no names were changed. Governments should definitely learn from this,” she added.

The controversy erupted after Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday announced the renaming of several places in Haridwar, Dehradun, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar districts. Defending the move, he said: “The names of the locations should be according to the culture, sentiments of local people, and Devbhoomi. The people have welcomed this step.” According to an official statement, the renaming aims to honor historical figures who contributed to Indian culture. Some of the key changes include Aurangzebpur renamed as Shivaji Nagar, Gajiwali as Arya Nagar, Mohammadpur Jat as Mohanpur Jat, Khanpur as Shri Krishna Pur, and Akbarpur Fazalpur as Vijayanagar in Haridwar district. In Dehradun, Miyanwala has been renamed Ramji Wala, Pirwala as Kesari Nagar, Chandpur Khurd as Prithviraj Nagar, and Abdullah Nagar as Daksh Nagar. In Nainital, Nawabi Road has been renamed Atal Marg, while the road from Panchakki to ITI is now Guru Golwalkar Marg.

While BJP supporters hail the move as a cultural revival, critics like Mayawati and opposition leaders argue that renaming places is a distraction from real governance issues.
