Kolkata: Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has slammed the West Bengal Police for what he termed as an unwarranted attempt to create panic among the public ahead of the Ram Navami festival. The former BJP national vice-president criticized the state’s decision to cancel police leaves from April 2-9, except in emergency cases, calling it an unnecessary move.

“These panic-driven decisions always come around Hindu festivals. The police should focus on those who create trouble instead of making such sweeping measures. Hindus celebrate their festivals peacefully, and Durga Puja sees massive participation without any unrest. The ruling party seems to have made it a habit to spread fear and tension unnecessarily,” said Ghosh.

His remarks come in response to statements by senior West Bengal Police officials who claimed they had intelligence inputs regarding potential violence attempts around the Ram Navami celebrations. On March 29, Additional Director General (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar stated that certain elements were planning to incite communal discord through posters and social media posts.

“We are on high alert and urge people to remain cautious. There might be efforts to provoke different communities, particularly during Ram Navami. We request citizens to stay calm and report any suspicious activities to the local police immediately,” said Sarkar.

These developments follow recent reports of communal clashes in Mothabari, Malda district. Amidst the rising tension, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, announced that around 2,000 rallies, both large and small, will take place during the Ram Navami celebrations this year.
