Manipur Govt Suspends Internet in 5 Districts for 5 Days Amid Law and Order Concerns

Imphal: The Manipur government has ordered a five-day suspension of internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN access, in five districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur—starting from 11:45 p.m. on June 7.

In an official order, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), N. Ashok Kumar, stated that the move was necessary due to the prevailing law and order situation in the state. “There is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of serious images, hate speech, and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public,” the order noted, adding that such activity could disturb public tranquility and lead to violent repercussions.

The government highlighted the risk of inflammatory material and false rumors being circulated via platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, which could trigger unrest, cause damage to property, and pose a threat to lives. “There is an imminent danger of loss of life and/or damage to public/private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquility and communal harmony,” the order emphasized.

The order also cited the potential use of mobile phones, tablets, dongles, and computers to send bulk messages and mobilize agitators, which could lead to incidents of arson, vandalism, or violence.

“To thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements and to maintain peace and communal harmony… it has become necessary to take adequate measures to maintain law and order in public interest,” the order concluded.
