Maharashtra tops gross GST revenue collection in December 2019

Mumbai: Maharashtra has topped the list of 37 state’s in terms of gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collection for December 2019. As per the figures released by the Union Ministry of Finance here on Wednesday, the gross GST revenue collection of Maharashtra which was Rs. 13,524 crore in December 2018, rose to Rs. 16,530 crore, a growth of 22 percent.

Maharashtra even tops the top 9 gross GST revenue generating state’s in the country for December 2019. The data is bound to set-off a tussle for claims between the ruling Shiv Sena and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The growth in GST revenue collections is recorded at a time when the state witnessed unprecedented prolonged monsoon rains, unseasonal rains and drought conditions in some parts of the state.

The other top 8 states with gross GST revenue collections for December 2019 are as follows: Karnataka – Rs. 6,886 crore (11 percent), Gujarat – Rs. 6,621 crore (18 percent), Tamil Nadu – Rs. 6,422 crore (19 percent), Uttar Pradesh – Rs. 5,489 crore (11 percent), Haryana – Rs. 5, 489 crore (11 percent), Haryana – Rs. 5,365 crore (15 percent), West Bengal – Rs. 3,748 crore (16 percent), New Delhi – Rs. 3,698 crore (18 percent) and Telangana – Rs. 3,420 crore (13 percent)

On the national level, the gross GST revenue collected in December, 2019 was Rs. 1,03,184 crore of which CGST was Rs. 19,962 crore (Central), SGST was Rs. 26,792 crore (State), IGST (Inter-Governmental) is Rs. 48,099 crore (including Rs. 21,295 crore collected on imports) and Cess was Rs. 8,331 crore (including Rs. 847 crore collected on imports). The total gross GST revenue collection which was Rs 69,983 crore in December 2018, grew by 16 percent to Rs. 80,849 crore in December 2019.

The total number of GSTR 3B Returns filed for the month of November up to December 31, 2019 is Rs. 81.21lakh. The trend in gross GST revenue collection which was Rs. 1.03 crore in April 2018, showed a rise to Rs 1.13 crore in April 2019. As against this the trend in gross GST revenue collection which was Rs. 94,726 crore in December 2018 rose to Rs 1.03 crore in April 2018.

The GST revenue income during the month of December, 2019 from domestic transactions has shown an impressive growth of 16 percent over the revenue during the month of December, 2018. If we consider IGST collected from imports, the total revenue during December, 2019 has increased by 9 percent in comparison to the revenue during December, 2018. During this month, the IGST on import of goods has seen a negative growth of minus 10 percent, but is an improvement over minus 13 percent last month and minus 20 percent in the month of October.

The government has settled Rs. 21,814crore to CGST and Rs. 15,366crore to SGST from IGST as regular settlement. The total revenue earned by Central Government and the State Governments after regular settlement in the month of December, 2019 is Rs. 41,776 crore for CGST and Rs. 42,158 crore for the SGST.
