Maharashtra to cap pricing of face masks and hand sanitizers: Tope

Mumbai: Maharashtra government on Monday announced that it is going to cap the pricing of face masks and hand sanitizers.  “A notification to this effect will be issued by the state government within a week”, Minister for Public Health minister Rajesh Tope told reporters.

Tope who initiated a battle to cap the pricing of face masks and sanitizers said people will have to adapt them as new normal and hence the vendors should not charge exorbitantly.

“I am in talks with the food and drug administration department. Letters on the issue have also been sent to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar”, he said.

The Maharashtra government has already capped the treatment prices of private hospitals where Covid positive patients are admitted and ambulances as well.

Referring to the antigen and anti-bodies tests, Tope said, a government resolution has been issued by the general administration on the same. “District collectors and municipal commissioners have been authorised to purchase the antigen and anti-bodies kits at their level”, he said. The cost of the kits has been fixed at Rs 450 and it provides results within half an hour, Tope added.

The government has also directed the health authorities to conduct anti-bodies tests on the frontline workers like doctors, police personnel among others as they are more vulnerable to get infected from Covid-19.  “Antigen and the anti-bodies test should be done in entire Maharashtra”, Tope asserted.
