Maharashtra: State-Run Transport App in the Works to Boost Employment for Marathi Youth

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government is developing a state-run app-based transport service that will offer auto-rickshaw, taxi, and bike rides across the state. The key objectives of this initiative are to streamline existing cab services and generate large-scale employment opportunities for the Marathi-speaking youth.

While the app is still under development, its final launch will follow after receiving clearance from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. A crucial meeting to finalize the app’s framework and operational structure has been scheduled at Mantralaya on August 5.

Several names are under consideration for the app, including Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri, and Maha-Go.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said, “The initiative will empower lakhs of youth across Maharashtra and provide a strong alternative to the monopoly of private aggregator companies.”

In a major financial support move, Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank has agreed to provide vehicle loans to unemployed Marathi youth at a concessional interest rate of 10%. Additionally, institutions like the Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, Vimukta Jati Corporation, and OBC Corporation will offer an 11% interest subsidy, effectively making these loans interest-free.

Sarnaik further mentioned that the app’s operational model is almost complete and is being developed according to the Centre’s aggregator policy. The technical framework is being designed in collaboration with the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology and supported by private tech firms.
