Mumbai: The upcoming film Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and based on the life of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has sparked controversy, with Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Uday Samant calling for its release to be blocked unless a specific dance sequence is removed.
Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar and set to release on February 14, 2024, features Kaushal in the role of Sambhaji Maharaj, a key historical figure from the Maratha empire. However, it is a particular dance number in the film that has drawn ire from Samant, who questioned its historical authenticity and called for the sequence to be deleted.
“The movie made by Vicky Kaushal shows Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje dancing. The director should cut this part,” Samant said, urging the filmmakers to consult historians and scholars to ensure the portrayal of historical figures is accurate. He emphasized that if any objections were raised by historians, the film’s release would be blocked.
While Samant acknowledged the filmmakers’ attempt to bring the legacy of Sambhaji Maharaj to a wider audience, he made it clear that historical accuracy must take precedence. “Such efforts are necessary to make the world understand the history of Chhatrapati. However, many have expressed their opinions that there are some objectionable scenes in this film,” he stated.
The call for changes in Chhaava has divided opinions, with some supporting Samant’s stance on preserving historical integrity, while others argue that artistic freedom should not be constrained by historical expectations.
As the controversy intensifies, all eyes are now on the filmmakers to see how they will respond to the demands, with the film’s February release now uncertain unless the requested changes are made.
