Mumbai: Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Ram Shinde on Thursday called for deeper and sustained collaboration between Wales and Maharashtra, stressing shared democratic values, cultural pride, and inclusive development, while addressing a distinguished gathering at the Senedd Cymru, the Welsh Parliament.
Speaking during the Maharashtra Legislators Executive Programme on Sustainable Leadership and Global Citizenship organised by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) from February 15 to 22, Shinde said that despite geographical distance, Maharashtra and Wales are united by a strong respect for democratic institutions, linguistic heritage, and people-centric governance.
He drew parallels between Wales’ commitment to preserving the Welsh language alongside innovation and Maharashtra’s efforts to protect and promote the Marathi language while emerging as one of India’s leading economic engines.
Shinde expressed appreciation for the academic and institutional engagement facilitated through UWTSD, noting that the programme offered Maharashtra legislators valuable exposure to global best practices in governance, public policy, sustainable development, and legislative procedures. He described the initiative as more than an academic exchange, calling it a “bridge connecting institutions and people across democracies.”
Highlighting the role of legislatures in a rapidly changing world, Shinde said parliamentary institutions must remain pillars of stability, dialogue, and accountability amid technological transformation and global challenges.
He also identified renewable energy, education, culture, fintech, manufacturing, and sustainable development as key areas with strong potential for future collaboration between Wales and Maharashtra.
Terming the visit a step towards a long-term partnership rather than a ceremonial engagement, Shinde invited Welsh legislators and representatives to visit Maharashtra, assuring them of warm friendship and cooperation.
The address formed part of the Maharashtra Legislative Council delegation’s study tour to the UK, aimed at strengthening legislative capacity, international cooperation, and global perspectives among Indian lawmakers.
