Mumbai: More than a year after announcing the Minority Training and Research Institute (MRTI), the Maharashtra government has finally approved the creation of 11 posts, clearing a key hurdle that had prevented the institute from becoming operational.
The Maharashtra cabinet had sanctioned MRTI on August 7, 2024, envisioning it as a dedicated body to support minority students through research, training, and preparation for competitive examinations. However, while similar state-run institutions such as SARTHI, MAHAJYOTI, and AMRUT began functioning soon after their approval, MRTI remained inactive due to the absence of sanctioned manpower.
The latest decision by the Maharashtra government allows the institute to begin work immediately. According to the Government Resolution (GR), staff will be appointed on deputation until regular recruitment is completed, enabling MRTI to roll out its programmes without further administrative delays.
Welcoming the move, Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh, who has consistently pursued the matter, said the approval must now translate into visible action. He urged the Maharashtra government to fast-track appointments and begin coaching classes for minority youth preparing for competitive examinations. “The institute should not lose any more time. Appointments and academic programmes must start at the earliest,” Shaikh said.
He also called for equal treatment of MRTI compared to institutions catering to other communities. Stressing the need for strong leadership, Shaikh demanded the appointment of a full-time Executive Director and adequate budgetary support. Since MRTI’s headquarters is located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, he said a dedicated website should be launched immediately to ensure accessibility for students across the state.
Pointing to persistent educational disparities, Shaikh noted that only a small proportion of students from minority communities reach graduation level. He said the Maharashtra government should ensure that MRTI also provides PhD scholarships and advanced academic guidance to help improve long-term representation in higher education and government services.
