Mumbai: A prolonged outage of the Maharashtra government’s e-Gazette portal has begun to raise concerns over public access to official notifications, with citizen groups flagging the disruption as a serious issue in an era where governance is increasingly dependent on digital platforms.
The portal — egazzate.mahaonline.gov.in — has reportedly been inaccessible for several days, displaying a standard message citing a “technical issue” and providing no clear timeline for full restoration. For users attempting to access official gazette notifications, the portal remains effectively unavailable.
The outage has triggered concern among civil society groups, who argue that access to gazette notifications is not merely a convenience, but a critical component of transparency and public information.
Bar. Vinod Tiwari, President of Grahak Bharti (Council for Protection of Rights), has written to authorities seeking urgent intervention to restore the portal. In his communication, Tiwari stated that the disruption has denied users access to essential government notifications and could potentially lead to administrative confusion and legal complications.

“These online portals are a basic source of information in today’s digital governance framework. Their prolonged failure affects not just convenience, but access to public information,” the representation noted.
Tiwari has also raised the possibility of a cyber-related issue behind the outage, suggesting that the disruption could be the result of external interference. However, there has been no official confirmation from the Government of Maharashtra or any cybersecurity agency to support this claim.
At present, the only visible communication on the portal indicates a technical issue, with no detailed explanation provided.
The absence of clarity has added to user frustration. With no alternate official channel readily available for accessing updated gazette notifications, citizens and stakeholders are left dependent on delayed or indirect sources of information.
The episode highlights a broader concern around digital governance infrastructure. As government services increasingly move online, the reliability and resilience of such platforms become central to ensuring transparency and accessibility.
A prolonged outage of an official portal — especially one that serves as a repository of legally significant notifications — raises questions about system preparedness, response mechanisms, and contingency planning.
While technical disruptions are not uncommon in large digital systems, the lack of timely communication and restoration can amplify public concern and erode confidence in institutional systems.
For now, users await clarity — and access.
Until then, a key pillar of public information remains out of reach.
