The Maharashtra cabinet has greenlit the decision to rename Ahmednagar district as Ahilya Nagar, becoming the third district in the state to undergo a name change.

In a statement made during the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Shinde declared on X, “Approval has been granted to rename Ahmednagar city as ‘Punyashlok Ahilya Devi Nagar’.”

The renaming initiative, which was among several plans approved during the cabinet meeting, reflects the state government’s commitment to honoring historical figures and cultural heritage.

Last year in May, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had announced in Ahmednagar that the district would be renamed as Ahilya Nagar.

The name Ahilya Nagar pays tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar, the illustrious queen of the Maratha Empire, who was born in Chondi village within Ahmednagar district.

Shinde’s announcement coincided with the 298th birth anniversary celebrations of the revered 18th-century queen, an occasion marked annually as Ahilyabai Holkar Jayanti.

This decision follows the Maharashtra government’s earlier move to rename the Aurangabad and Osmanabad Revenue Divisions to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv Revenue Divisions, respectively, in September last year.

The renaming of these divisions was initiated on June 29, 2022, by then-chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. However, his administration’s decision drew criticism from current Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who deemed the move illegal.

The controversy surrounding the renaming decision emerged amid political upheaval, following Thackeray’s resignation prompted by a rebellion within his party. This event led to the downfall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, comprised of the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Shiv Sena, ultimately paving the way for a new administration under Chief Minister Shinde.
