In a major relief for travelers, Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu announced a 50% reduction in airfares for passengers traveling to Maha Kumbh 2025, as per an NDTV report. The revised fares will be effective from February 1 following government intervention after soaring ticket prices to Prayagraj during the ongoing religious event.

The decision came after the government held three rounds of discussions with airline companies, urging them to bring down prices. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had earlier directed airlines to rationalize fares, following a sharp increase in Delhi-Prayagraj ticket prices—some of which surged 21-fold due to overwhelming demand.

To accommodate the surge in pilgrims, the DGCA approved 81 additional flights in January, bringing the total flights operating to and from Prayagraj to 132.

Despite the fare cut, the aviation minister assured that airlines would not suffer financial losses due to the pricing revision.

The Maha Kumbh 2025, which began on January 13 and will conclude on February 26, has witnessed a massive footfall of over 199.4 million devotees so far. However, the event has also seen unfortunate incidents, including a stampede earlier this week at the main bathing ghats, resulting in at least 30 fatalities.
