A severe shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has pushed the hospitality sector in Thane to the brink, with more than 800 hotels and restaurants warning of a possible shutdown within days if supplies are not restored.

Industry representatives say the shortage has been triggered by disruptions in the global supply chain due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has affected fuel distribution across several parts of India.

Hotels Left With Only Few Days Of Gas

According to Thane City Hotel Association secretary Raghunath Shetty, many food businesses in the city have limited cooking gas reserves left.

“Most hotels currently have LPG stock for only five to six days. If fresh supply does not arrive soon, several establishments may be forced to temporarily shut operations,” he said while speaking to reporters.

Hotel operators have also reportedly been warned by suppliers that the situation may worsen if the supply chain disruption continues.

Black Marketing Allegations Surface

The shortage has also triggered allegations of black marketing in the commercial LPG market.

Vice President of the Thane City Hotel Association, Ratnakar Shetty, claimed that some suppliers are exploiting the crisis by selling cylinders at inflated prices.

According to him, certain vendors are charging an additional ₹400 per cylinder in the black market due to the growing demand and limited supply.

Most Hotels Depend Entirely On LPG

The problem has become more serious because the majority of hotels in Thane rely heavily on LPG cylinders for cooking.

Industry representatives said only about 30 per cent of hotels in the city have piped natural gas connections, while the remaining 70 per cent depend completely on LPG cylinders.

Typically, restaurants use 19.5-kg commercial LPG cylinders, with larger establishments consuming up to two cylinders per day. Smaller eateries also depend on regular supply, using one cylinder roughly every two days.

Hospitality Sector Seeks Urgent Government Help

Hotel associations have appealed to government authorities and oil marketing companies to intervene quickly to stabilise supplies.

They have demanded a streamlined distribution system to prevent hoarding and ensure that hotels receive adequate cylinders.

Industry leaders warn that if the shortage continues, thousands of workers employed in Thane’s hospitality sector could be affected.

Centre Asks States To Monitor LPG Supply

Amid the wider shortage of commercial LPG cylinders across the country, the central government has asked states and Union Territories to closely monitor LPG distribution.

Authorities have been instructed to prevent hoarding and black marketing while ensuring that available stocks are distributed fairly among consumers and commercial establishments.

As the West Asia crisis continues to affect global energy supplies, businesses across India remain concerned about the impact on fuel availability in the coming weeks.
