In a significant development amid the escalating conflict in West Asia and the global energy crisis, Iran has allowed Indian oil tankers to safely pass through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz following diplomatic talks between India and Iran, according to India TV sources.
The decision comes at a time when maritime traffic through the key oil route has been severely affected due to the ongoing war in the region, raising global concerns about energy supply disruptions.
Diplomatic Talks Between India and Iran
According to India TV sources, India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar recently held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, after which Iranian authorities permitted Indian oil shipments to pass through the narrow waterway.
The two leaders held a telephonic conversation on March 10, where they discussed the worsening situation in West Asia and the safety of maritime routes used for energy supplies.
This was the third conversation between the two leaders in about two weeks, indicating active diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Tehran during the ongoing crisis.
Jaishankar first spoke with Araghchi on February 28, followed by another discussion on March 5, before the latest conversation on March 10.
First Indian-Bound Oil Shipment Reaches Mumbai
In a key development highlighting the impact of the diplomatic talks, a Liberian-flagged oil tanker successfully reached India after navigating the tense waters of the Strait of Hormuz.
The tanker Shenlong Suezmax, commanded by an Indian captain, arrived at Mumbai port after carrying 135,335 metric tonnes of Saudi crude oil.
The vessel had loaded the crude from Ras Tanura on March 1 and crossed the Strait of Hormuz on March 8.
Tracking data showed that the ship briefly disappeared from radar before reappearing the next day, a tactic often used to avoid detection in conflict-prone waters.
Strait of Hormuz: A Critical Global Oil Route
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most crucial energy chokepoints.
The narrow maritime corridor lies between Iran and Oman and connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. A significant portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass through this route.
Experts estimate that nearly 13 million barrels of oil per day move through the strait, accounting for roughly 31 percent of global crude shipments.
Any disruption in this passage has immediate repercussions on international oil prices and global energy markets.
War In West Asia Enters Day 13
The conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel has now entered its 13th day, with no clear signs of de-escalation.
Military strikes and rising tensions in the region have significantly reduced maritime movement in the Persian Gulf area, pushing global oil prices higher.
Iran has reportedly tightened controls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, while stating that vessels not linked to the interests of the United States or Israel would be allowed safe passage.
Even short disruptions in the past have had strong effects on global markets. For instance, a brief disturbance in February 2025 caused oil prices to surge by nearly six percent.
As the conflict continues, global energy markets remain on edge, with countries like India closely monitoring developments to secure uninterrupted oil supplies.
