The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s announcement of Union Minister Piyush Goyal as its candidate for the Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency has sparked discontent among supporters of veteran leader Gopal Shetty, the sitting MP from the constituency. Shetty’s loyalists expressed their displeasure on Thursday, demanding a reconsideration of the party’s decision and warning of indefinite protests.
Gopal Shetty, a two-time MP who represented Mumbai North in 2014 and 2019, witnessed a wave of support from his followers who gathered at his residence and office to express their disappointment. Shetty, visibly upset by the party’s decision, acknowledged the natural reaction of his supporters and assured them that he would continue to fulfill his duties, emphasizing his dedication to serving the people.
Despite attempts to reconcile with the BJP’s decision, Shetty recognized that such surprises were not uncommon in the party’s dynamics. He affirmed his commitment to engaging with the public and carrying out his responsibilities diligently.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis intervened in the matter, visiting Shetty’s residence and offering reassurance. However, the BJP leadership remained firm on its decision, asserting that there would be no reconsideration of replacing Shetty with Piyush Goyal.
Gopal Shetty, a stalwart of the BJP with over three decades of association with the party, has a strong political legacy in Mumbai North. His victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, defeating Congress candidate Urmila Matondkar by a significant margin, underscored his popularity and grassroots support. Despite his contributions, the party cited various factors in its decision-making process.
However, Shetty’s tenure has not been without controversy, notably in 2016 when he made contentious remarks about protesting farmers. Despite clarifications, the incident remains a point of contention.
The decision to sideline Gopal Shetty in favor of Piyush Goyal has triggered unrest among his supporters, highlighting internal tensions within the BJP ahead of the upcoming elections.
