In a significant development, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Uzair Khan has been confirmed dead in the ongoing encounter that commenced almost a week ago in the forested vicinity surrounding Gadool village in Kokernag, Anantnag district. The operation, which has been marked by intense clashes, has seen the successful elimination of key terrorist figures.

Addressing the press on Tuesday (September 19), Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, provided an update on the situation, revealing that the bodies of two terrorists had been recovered. The search efforts are currently underway to locate the third terrorist’s body, as well as to neutralize any potential explosives or ammunition left behind.

ADGP Vijay Kumar issued an appeal to the public to refrain from visiting the area, emphasizing the possibility of undiscovered explosives. He stated, “The search operation will continue as many areas are still left. We would appeal to the public to not go there. We had the information about 2-3 terrorists. It’s possible that we find the third body somewhere, that’s why we will complete the search operation. We found the body of the LeT Commander and retrieved it; we could also spot another body. We’re looking for the third body.”

The Anantnag encounter began on Wednesday, September 13, when a fierce firefight erupted between security personnel from the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and armed terrorists in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district. Tragically, five security forces personnel, including a J&K Police Deputy Superintendent, Indian Army officers, and soldiers, made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives in the intense gun battle against the terrorists. The operation underscores the ongoing efforts by security forces to combat terrorism in the region and ensure the safety and security of the local populace.
