Lalit Modi Revives Kochi IPL Row, Claims Shashi Tharoor Pressured Him Over Sunanda Pushkar Questions

Lalit Modi Makes Fresh Claims About Kochi IPL Franchise Episode

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has reignited debate over one of the league’s most controversial chapters by alleging that Congress MP Shashi Tharoor attempted to dissuade him from examining the role of Sunanda Pushkar during the formation of the Kochi IPL franchise.

Speaking in a recent interview, Modi claimed he became concerned after reviewing the ownership structure of the consortium that secured the Kochi franchise. According to him, certain aspects of the shareholding arrangement raised questions about the distribution of equity among investors.

Questions Over Ownership Structure

Modi alleged that he repeatedly sought clarification about the identities and stakes of various shareholders involved in the consortium. He claimed that one particular allocation of equity attracted his attention and prompted him to seek additional details before approving the final agreement.

According to Modi, he was uncomfortable signing documents without fully understanding the financial arrangement behind the franchise. He maintained that transparency regarding ownership was necessary before the team could formally enter the league.

Allegation of Political Pressure

The former IPL chief further claimed that he received a phone call from Shashi Tharoor during the controversy. Modi alleged that Tharoor requested that questions regarding Sunanda Pushkar’s involvement not be pursued.

Modi stated that he rejected the request and decided against approving the agreement at that stage. The allegations relate to events surrounding the Kochi franchise bid that became a major political and sporting controversy in 2010.

Kochi Franchise’s Short-Lived Journey

The Kochi team entered the IPL as part of the league’s expansion but lasted only one season. The franchise participated in the 2011 tournament before being terminated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India over contractual and ownership-related disputes.

The controversy surrounding the franchise eventually spilled into the political arena and led to intense public scrutiny of several individuals associated with the bid.

Old Controversy Back in Spotlight

Modi’s latest remarks have brought renewed attention to a dispute that played a significant role in shaping one of the IPL’s most turbulent periods. While the allegations have once again triggered discussion around the Kochi franchise saga, the claims reflect Modi’s version of events and relate to a controversy that has remained a subject of debate for more than a decade.
