In his address during the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi began by lauding the President’s speech. He praised the speech for instilling new confidence in the nation, laying out a path for a developed India in the next 25 years.

However, the Prime Minister also took a veiled jibe at former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, without naming him. PM Modi remarked, “Aaj kal media me zara jyada hi jyada charcha ho rahi hai, social media me aur jyada ho rahi hai. Kuchh netaaon ka focus, gharon mein, jacuzzi par, stylish showers par hai, lekin hamara focus toh har ghar jal pahuchane par hai” (These days there’s a lot of discussion in the media, and even more on social media. Some leaders are focused on homes, jacuzzis, and stylish showers, but our focus is on delivering water to every household).

This statement came a day before the Delhi Assembly elections, which are set to take place on February 5. The BJP has accused Kejriwal of leading a ‘luxurious’ lifestyle, claiming that public funds were used to renovate his former official residence, dubbed ‘Sheeshmahal,’ at a significant cost. The term ‘Sheeshmahal’ has become a key talking point in the BJP’s election campaign against the AAP, with the party using it to criticize the Delhi Chief Minister’s extravagant use of taxpayer money.

PM Modi further reiterated the importance of the President’s speech, stating that it strengthens the nation’s resolve for a prosperous and developed India. The Prime Minister emphasized that the President’s address creates new confidence and inspires the people towards achieving the country’s goals of development.

As the Delhi Assembly election draws near, the political atmosphere remains charged, with key issues, including allegations of luxury and governance, continuing to dominate the discourse.
