Clashes Erupt During Repolling in South 24 Parganas; Security Tightened, Voting Continues

Tensions Flare Between Bharatiya Janata Party and All India Trinamool Congress Supporters

Fresh tensions were reported during repolling in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, where supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Trinamool Congress allegedly clashed at certain polling locations.

BJP supporters claimed they were being obstructed from casting their votes, triggering unrest in the area. In response, authorities deployed heavy security personnel to maintain order and ensure the continuation of the polling process.

Police Say Situation Under Control

A senior police official stated that the situation has been stabilised. “The situation is currently under control… People have some specific demands. There is a case of some intimidation, and a case has also been registered in that regard. We have heard their demands,” the Additional Superintendent of Police told ANI.

Officials confirmed that complaints related to intimidation are being examined and necessary action has been initiated.

Voter Turnout Crosses 50% in Key Constituencies

Despite the disturbances, voting continued across affected areas. By 1 PM, voter turnout stood at approximately 56.33% in Magrahat Paschim and 54.6% in Diamond Harbour assembly constituencies, indicating steady participation.

Repoll Ordered After Earlier Complaints

The repolling exercise was ordered by the Election Commission of India following allegations of irregularities, including concerns over EVM functioning, during the second phase of polling held on April 29.

A total of 15 polling stations in South 24 Parganas are undergoing repolling to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Counting Scheduled for May 4

Vote counting for all five assembly elections, including West Bengal, is scheduled to take place on May 4, when the final outcome will be declared.
