Kolkata: The Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah, Kolkata, sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment until death in the high-profile RG Kar rape and murder case on Monday. The court ruled that the case did not meet the criteria of “the rarest of the rare” to warrant the death penalty, despite the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) pushing for it earlier in the day.

In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered the state to pay a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the family of the victim, an RG Kar doctor. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict.

However, the victim’s parents expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision. They stated that they “do not want compensation” and instead, emphasized that they “want justice.”

In his defense, Roy, who had earlier maintained his innocence, opposed the death penalty. “I am being framed, and have not committed any crime. I have not done anything and still, I have been held guilty,” he told the court prior to his sentencing.
