A sharp political exchange erupted in the Rajya Sabha after Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised concerns about LPG supply and rising uncertainty amid tensions in West Asia. Union Minister JP Nadda responded strongly, accusing the Congress of politicising the situation and spreading panic among the public.
The issue was raised during Zero Hour in the Upper House, where Kharge warned that the ongoing geopolitical situation in West Asia could impact LPG availability and prices in India.
Kharge Raises LPG Supply Concerns
Kharge said the government must pay attention to potential disruptions in LPG supply, claiming that the issue is already affecting several sectors including households, restaurants, hostels and commercial establishments.
“I want to draw the government’s attention towards the LPG issue owing to the situation in West Asia. This is affecting the middle class, restaurants, hostels and commercial users,” Kharge said while speaking in the Rajya Sabha.
He further claimed that while the government has maintained there is no shortage of LPG, reports from the ground suggest otherwise.
“During this current situation, the availability of LPG and price stability have become serious issues. In the Lok Sabha, the Union Petroleum Minister said there is no shortage of LPG, but the ground reality appears different,” Kharge added.
Nadda Accuses Congress of Hoarding Cylinders
Responding to the remarks, Union Minister JP Nadda criticised the opposition and alleged that a Congress leader had been caught hoarding LPG cylinders.
“A Congress leader has been caught hoarding cylinders. They are inciting the peaceful people of the country,” Nadda said.
He further accused the opposition, especially the Congress party, of doing politics even during challenging times.
“It is sad that the Opposition, particularly the Congress, doesn’t stop doing politics even during difficult times. This crisis is not due to India,” Nadda added.
Heated Exchange During Zero Hour
The debate also saw procedural objections as Nadda reminded Kharge about parliamentary rules regarding speaking time during Zero Hour.
“The Leader of Opposition should know this is Zero Hour, and one has to conclude speaking within three minutes. This rule is for everyone,” Nadda said in response.
LPG Supply Debate Intensifies
The exchange reflects growing political tension over the LPG supply issue as concerns about global energy disruptions continue due to instability in West Asia. While the government maintains that there is no shortage of LPG in the country, opposition leaders have demanded clarity and stronger assurances regarding supply stability and pricing.
