Days after the United Democratic Front secured a decisive victory in the Kerala Assembly elections, suspense continues over who will become the state’s next chief minister as the Congress leadership remains locked in consultations.
Sources within the party indicated that two senior Congress leaders have emerged as the frontrunners for the top post following the alliance’s return to power after a decade in opposition.
KC Venugopal Emerges As Strong Contender
Among the names being seriously considered is K. C. Venugopal, the Lok Sabha MP from Alappuzha and one of the most influential organisational leaders within the Congress party.
Venugopal is considered a close confidant of Rahul Gandhi and has played a major role in restructuring the Congress organisation at the national level over the past few years.
Party insiders believe the final decision on his elevation may largely depend on consultations involving the central leadership.
Ramesh Chennithala Also In The Race
Another senior leader being discussed for the chief minister’s post is Ramesh Chennithala, a veteran politician with decades of experience in both state and national politics.
Chennithala has previously served as Kerala’s Home Minister, Leader of Opposition and president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
Currently handling party responsibilities in Maharashtra, he is widely regarded within Congress circles as a strong organisational strategist and experienced administrator.
Congress Likely To Finalise Decision Soon
Party leaders indicated that a final decision regarding the chief ministerial candidate may be announced by Sunday after meetings between MLAs and AICC observers conclude.
Senior Congress leader K. Muraleedharan told reporters that discussions were ongoing and party legislators had already conveyed their opinions to the central leadership.
The Congress leadership is expected to focus on balancing regional, organisational and alliance considerations before making the final announcement.
UDF Registers Massive Electoral Victory
The UDF staged a powerful political comeback in Kerala after spending nearly 10 years in opposition.
The alliance won 102 seats in the Assembly elections, comfortably crossing the majority mark and ending the rule of the Left Democratic Front.
The Congress emerged as the single-largest party within the coalition by securing 63 seats.
Alliance Partners Strengthen UDF Majority
Along with Congress, the UDF coalition includes the Indian Union Muslim League, Kerala Congress (Jacob), Revolutionary Marxist Party of India and Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samithy among other regional parties.
The IUML emerged as a major contributor to the alliance victory with 22 seats, while smaller allies also managed to secure representation in the Assembly.
