SRH Storm to Top Spot with Commanding Win Over PBKS Despite Connolly’s Lone Fight

Mumbai: In a format that is constantly redefining totals, 235 can sometimes appear both imposing and vulnerable. That paradox defined the contest as Sunrisers Hyderabad recorded a commanding, high-quality win over Punjab Kings in a game shaped as much by execution as missed opportunities. The result also pushed SRH to the top of the IPL points table, overtaking Punjab in the process.

The opening overs set the tone for everything that followed. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head were once again in complete control, mixing aggression with precision in the powerplay. Abhishek’s 35 off just 13 balls immediately established momentum, hitting cleanly through the line and punishing anything in his arc, while Head complemented him with calculated strokeplay against both pace and length. SRH raced through the first three overs without losing a wicket, dictating terms early and forcing Punjab onto the defensive.

Even when the breakthroughs came through Lockie Ferguson and Yuzvendra Chahal, the momentum never truly slowed. Instead, the innings evolved into a different kind of dominance. Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan ensured the middle overs became an extension of pressure rather than a rebuilding phase. Kishan’s half-century arrived with fluency, while Klaasen, after being handed multiple chances, gradually took complete control of the innings.

Those moments proved decisive. Dropped catches, a missed stumping, and lapses in the field eventually cost Punjab heavily. Giving Klaasen time on a surface where timing mattered more than brute power was always likely to prove expensive.

By the 14th over, SRH had moved to 168 for 2, and expectations naturally shifted towards a total beyond 250. But the final phase unfolded differently. Kishan’s dismissal for 55 and a brief spell of disciplined bowling from Punjab slowed the acceleration just enough. Klaasen’s well-constructed 69 still ensured a commanding finish, while Vijaykumar Vyshak’s final over prevented SRH from pushing even further. Nitish Kumar Reddy added the late impetus as SRH closed on 235 — massive in most contexts, but in modern T20 cricket, still chaseable.

Heinrich Klaasen punished Punjab Kings through the middle overs with a composed and authoritative innings.

Punjab, however, never truly recovered from the opening blows.

Pat Cummins struck immediately, and Nitish Kumar Reddy removed another batter soon after as PBKS collapsed to 4 for 2. The chase became heavily tilted almost instantly, and Shreyas Iyer’s dismissal only deepened the pressure. The required rate was already demanding, but the early wickets turned the innings into a prolonged battle against both scoreboard and momentum.

There was, however, a brief period when the contest threatened to shift.

Cooper Connolly’s counterattacking century briefly gave Punjab Kings hope during a difficult chase.

Marcus Stoinis and Cooper Connolly counterattacked with intent, finding boundaries regularly and briefly dragging the required rate within sight. Stoinis looked particularly dangerous against both spin and pace, while Connolly played with composure beyond the situation. But nothing could fully shift the momentum. Once Stoinis departed, SRH regained control, and the chase began to unravel again.

Cummins’ variations in pace, combined with disciplined support from the rest of the attack, ensured Punjab never managed to build a sustained partnership. The contrast in fielding standards between the two sides also remained evident throughout the game. While Punjab were erratic and costly in key moments, SRH remained composed, efficient, and sharp under pressure.

The final phase belonged almost entirely to Connolly.

With the result virtually settled, he produced an innings of remarkable quality and resistance. Nervous yet inventive in the nineties, he improvised constantly, finding boundaries in unconventional ways before bringing up a maiden IPL hundred with a shot born equally out of desperation and skill. A towering six over long-off briefly lifted the atmosphere, but the equation remained unrealistic. On the final ball, Connolly swung once more at a slower delivery from Shivang Kumar and missed.

The innings ended not in triumph, but as a reminder of how much had already been lost earlier in the chase.

In the end, the result reflected the balance of the contest. SRH were superior in the phases that matter most in T20 cricket — the powerplay, the middle overs under pressure, and execution in the field. Punjab, meanwhile, spent most of the evening reacting rather than controlling, their discipline slipping at moments that proved decisive.

It was not merely the size of the total that defined the game, but the clarity with which it was constructed and defended.

Sunrisers Hyderabad celebrate a commanding win that pushed them to the top of the IPL 2026 points table.

This was not just a win for SRH but a performance that defined their identity.
