Kerala Archbishop Slams Arrest of Nuns in Chhattisgarh: “They Were Already Christians, Where’s the Question of Conversion?”

Thiruvananthapuram: In a strong reaction to the arrest of two Kerala-based nuns in Chhattisgarh on allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversion, Major Archbishop of Thiruvananthapuram, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, expressed deep concern over the handling of the case and the motivations behind the charges.

Speaking to the press, Cardinal Cleemis said, “The Minister for Education of Kerala met us and assured that everything will be done to protect the sisters who have been arrested. But with the bail being denied, we are forced to question what motivates these people to act in such a manner.”

He emphasized that the nuns, who were taken into custody while traveling with other individuals, have consistently maintained that the journey was undertaken voluntarily and without any element of coercion. “The sisters are saying that they have travelled on their own. Yet some people want to frame this as forced conversion,” the Cardinal stated.

Calling the allegations baseless, Cardinal Cleemis added, “We have full confidence in the Indian judiciary. We will take the necessary legal measures in the Court. We believe in justice and hope the truth will come out.”

Dismissing the very foundation of the accusations, he pointed out, “They are already Christians. There is no issue of conversion at all. These claims are not only misleading but also damaging to the spirit of religious harmony.”

The arrest has sparked concern in Kerala, where Christian leaders have raised questions over growing instances of what they see as targeted harassment under the pretext of anti-conversion laws.
