A fresh political confrontation has erupted over India’s fuel situation after Congress leader K. C. Venugopal sharply criticised the central government and accused it of ignoring the struggles faced by ordinary citizens.
The controversy began after Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured the Parliament of India that the country is not facing any fuel shortage despite the global energy disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
While the government maintains that fuel supplies remain stable, opposition leaders argue that the situation on the ground tells a different story, especially in several cities where businesses and consumers have complained about difficulties in obtaining LPG cylinders.
“Government Is Not Living In Reality”: Venugopal
Reacting strongly to the minister’s statement, Venugopal said the government appears to be disconnected from the everyday problems faced by the public.
“They are not living in reality. They are living in a dream world,” the Congress MP said while speaking to reporters.
He further claimed that people across the country, including in the national capital, are facing serious difficulties.
“In our constituencies, people are suffering like anything. In the national capital, we can see how people are suffering. This reality is not affecting them because they are living in a different world, not with the common people,” he said.
The remarks reflect the opposition’s growing attempt to highlight the impact of the global energy crisis on ordinary citizens.
Opposition Blames Government’s Foreign Policy
Venugopal also linked the current situation to the central government’s foreign policy decisions. According to him, the problems being faced by people are the result of policy choices made by the government in handling international relations and energy imports.
“Common people are suffering only because of this government’s attitude and foreign policy,” he said.
The Congress leader also alleged that the government is trying to prevent Rahul Gandhi from raising the issue in Parliament.
“They don’t want Rahul Gandhi to speak on these issues,” Venugopal claimed, suggesting that opposition voices are being restricted from discussing the crisis.
Government Says Fuel Supply Is Secure
The central government has rejected claims of any shortage and has repeatedly assured the public that India’s fuel supply chain remains stable.
Speaking earlier in Parliament, Hardeep Singh Puri said the government has taken several measures to ensure uninterrupted availability of crude oil, petrol, diesel and LPG. According to him, India has diversified its energy sources and is importing fuel through multiple routes to prevent disruptions.
Officials have also said that strategic reserves and alternative supply arrangements are being used to maintain stability in the domestic energy market.
Background: Global Energy Crisis And Middle East War
The debate comes at a time when the global energy market is facing major uncertainty due to rising tensions in the Middle East. The ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States has raised fears about disruptions to oil supplies.
One of the key concerns is the security of shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large portion of the world’s crude oil trade passes.
India imports a significant share of its crude oil from international markets, making the country sensitive to global energy disruptions. As a result, the government has been closely monitoring the situation and exploring alternative supply sources to ensure domestic fuel availability.
With opposition leaders continuing to question the government’s handling of the situation, the issue of fuel and LPG supply is expected to remain a major point of debate in Parliament in the coming days.
