Washington: Outgoing US President Joe Biden revealed on Friday (January 10) that he believed he could have won against Donald Trump in the 2024 general elections. However, Biden explained that he made the difficult decision to withdraw from the race for the sake of party unity, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
In a news conference at the White House, Biden was asked if he regretted not seeking re-election, to which he responded confidently, “I think I would have beaten Trump, could have beaten Trump, and I think that Kamala (Harris) could have beaten Trump, would have beaten Trump.” He added that his decision was not driven by personal ambitions but by the need to unify the Democratic Party at a critical time.
Biden explained, “It wasn’t about—I thought it was important to unify the party and when the party was worried about whether or not I was going to be able to move even though I thought I could win again, I thought it was better to unify the party.”
He further emphasized that stepping aside for Harris, his running mate, was his way of ensuring a united front. “It was the greatest honor of my life to be president of the United States, but I didn’t want to be the one who caused a party that wasn’t unified to lose an election,” Biden said.
Biden’s decision to withdraw came after facing significant pressure from party leaders following a lackluster debate performance. Despite his confidence in Harris’ ability to win, she ultimately lost to Trump in a decisive victory for the Republican Party, which not only reclaimed the White House but also retained control of the House of Representatives and gained the Senate majority.
