As the floor test looms in Jharkhand, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) finds itself embroiled in internal dissent and external pressures. With claims of support from 47 MLAs, the party is bracing itself against alleged poaching attempts by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while grappling with dissent from within its own ranks.

Amidst this political turmoil, JMM MLA Lobin Hembrom has emerged as a vocal critic of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, accusing him of neglecting crucial promises made to the electorate. Hembrom, representing the Borio seat in Sahibganj district, lamented the non-implementation of key legislative measures outlined in the JMM manifesto ahead of the 2019 state polls.

The JMM manifesto had pledged to implement the Chota Nagpur Tenancy Act and the Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act, legislation aimed at safeguarding the land rights of tribals. However, Hembrom highlighted the failure of the party to fulfill these commitments upon assuming power. Additionally, he underscored the non-implementation of the Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA Act), which seeks to empower gram sabhas to protect tribals from exploitation.

“The gram sabha has no power now. If the PESA Act was implemented, it would be more powerful. When none of these shields (for tribals) was implemented, we were forced to form this forum, Jharkhand Bachao Morcha,” remarked Hembrom.

The disillusionment within the party ranks has led to speculation about Hembrom’s potential departure from the JMM. While he has not yet tendered his resignation, reports suggest his discontent with the current state of affairs within the party.

“Ab party se mohbhang hogaya hai (I am disillusioned with the party now). I have great respect for guruji and we worked alongside for the tribals’ rights for a long time. But today outsiders are calling the shots within the party. Hence I have decided to leave the party,” Hembrom conveyed, as reported by Times of India.

As Jharkhand braces for a crucial floor test, the internal dissent within the ruling JMM underscores the challenges faced by the party in maintaining cohesion and addressing the concerns of its constituents. With political dynamics evolving rapidly, the outcome of the floor test and the resolution of internal strife will shape the future trajectory of Jharkhand’s political landscape.
