New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday criticized the West’s selective approach toward global conflicts, stating that what was originally an “invasion” in Kashmir had been reframed as a “dispute”. He also emphasized the need for a strong and fair United Nations to uphold sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2025 during a session titled ‘Thrones and Thorns: Defending the Integrity of Nations’, Jaishankar highlighted how the United Nations had equated the attacker and the victim in Kashmir, allowing the illegal occupation of Indian territory to persist.

“We all speak of sovereignty and territorial integrity. It’s a vital principle and a bedrock of global rules. After World War II, the longest-standing illegal presence and occupation of a territory by another country pertains to India in Kashmir. We went to the UN. What was an invasion was made into a dispute. The attacker and the victim were put on par. Who were the culpable parties? UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, USA? So pardon me, I have some question marks on that whole topic…,” Jaishankar stated.

Taking aim at Western hypocrisy, Jaishankar remarked, “When the West goes out into other countries, it’s in pursuance of democratic freedoms. But when other countries come into the West, it seems to have a very malign intention.”

Jaishankar’s remarks have sparked discussions on India’s long-standing stance on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and the role of Western powers in shaping the narrative around the region. His comments also underline India’s growing assertiveness in global diplomacy, demanding accountability from the international community on historical injustices.
