“Such lethal actions are not justified”: Jaishankar Raises Death of Indian Mariners With Rubio After Gulf Strike

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has taken up the issue of three Indian mariners killed in recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Gulf of Oman, conveying India’s strong concerns directly to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The development comes amid growing diplomatic tensions after multiple merchant ships carrying Indian crew members were targeted in the region over the past week.

India Voices Strong Objection

Speaking about his conversation with Rubio, Jaishankar said India had clearly conveyed its displeasure over the attacks that resulted in the deaths of Indian nationals.

“Spoke to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this evening. I reiterated India’s strong protest at the attacks by the US Navy in the Gulf that killed three Indian mariners,” Jaishankar said.

“Such lethal actions against commercial shipping are not justified,” he added.

The minister’s remarks underline New Delhi’s concerns over the safety of civilian vessels operating in a region already witnessing heightened tensions.

Diplomatic Action Intensifies

The issue has prompted India to step up diplomatic engagement with Washington. Earlier, Indian authorities summoned US Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks and formally conveyed their concerns regarding attacks involving vessels carrying Indian crew members.

Officials stressed that commercial shipping routes must remain protected and that civilian sailors should not be exposed to military action.

Three Indians Among Victims

The controversy intensified after an attack on the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello, which had 24 Indian sailors on board. While most crew members were rescued, three Indian mariners lost their lives in the incident.

The deaths have sparked concern among maritime authorities and families of seafarers, with the government closely monitoring developments.

Multiple Ships Affected

The Settebello incident was not an isolated case. Other vessels carrying Indian crew members also came under threat in recent days.

A Palau-flagged tanker, Marivex, carrying 24 Indians, was reportedly disabled during military operations, though all crew members were rescued safely. Another vessel, Jalveer, carrying 20 Indian sailors, was also attacked, adding to concerns over the safety of shipping lanes in the Gulf region.

Focus on Maritime Security

With thousands of Indian seafarers employed across global shipping routes, the government is expected to continue pressing for stronger safeguards for civilian vessels operating in conflict-prone waters.
