Congress leader Jairam Ramesh launched a scathing critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent assertion that 140 crore Indians are his family, labeling the last decade of Modi’s rule as an era of injustice (“anyaay kaal”) for the citizens. Ramesh highlighted persistent issues like inflation, unemployment, economic instability, and polarization that have plagued the country under Modi’s leadership.

“If 140 crore Indians are PM Modi’s family members, then why has he done injustice to them?” questioned Ramesh, emphasizing the disconnect between the Prime Minister’s rhetoric and the ground reality. He underscored the Congress party’s commitment to addressing the concerns of the people and holding the government accountable for its actions.

Ramesh further criticized Modi’s persona, branding him as a marketing figure who self-proclaims himself as a global leader (“Vishwaguru”). He emphasized that respect is earned through respectful behavior, suggesting that Modi’s conduct falls short of the standards expected from a democratically elected leader.

The Congress leader’s remarks come in response to Modi’s recent comments during which he declared that he considers the entire country as his family. Modi’s assertion was made in the context of countering criticism from the opposition, particularly the INDIA bloc, which has adopted a strategy to target him.

The ongoing verbal sparring intensified following remarks by RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav, who questioned Modi’s Hindu credentials and mocked him for not having a family of his own. The BJP swiftly responded by appending “Modi ka parivaar” (Modi’s family) to the social media handles of several prominent party leaders, signaling a concerted effort to rally support ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The exchange reflects the political maneuvering and rhetoric that often characterize election campaigns in India, reminiscent of the “main bhi chowkidar” (I am also a watchman) versus “chowkidar chor hai” (the watchman is a thief) narrative that dominated the political discourse in 2019.

As the political landscape heats up, the stage is set for a high-stakes battle for power, with both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress vying for public support and electoral success.
