Toronto: Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), has resigned after a crushing defeat in the general election. Singh lost his own seat in Burnaby Central, British Columbia, and the party is now at risk of losing its official status in Parliament.

Singh, 46, stepped down after the NDP was reduced to just seven seats, securing only 2% of the vote share. This marks a significant decline from the 24 seats the party held in the previous election. In his concession speech, Singh expressed disappointment but emphasized his hope for the future of the party and the movement.

“I am disappointed that we could not win more seats. But I am not disappointed in our movement. I am hopeful for our Party. I KNOW that we will always choose hope over fear,” Singh said, reflecting on the defeat.
