In a move aimed at maintaining public order during ongoing farmer protests, authorities in Haryana’s Ambala district have suspended internet services and imposed restrictions on bulk SMS in several villages along the Shambhu Border. The suspension, which started on December 6, will last until December 9. The affected areas include Dangdehri, Lohgarh, Manakpur, Dadiyana, Bari Ghel, Lhars, Kalu Majra, Devi Nagar, Saddopur, Sultanpur, and Kakru villages.

The internet shutdown, which also includes a ban on bulk SMS, has been enforced to prevent the spread of misinformation and to ensure public safety amid the demonstrations. According to the order issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Misra, the restrictions are in place due to concerns about “tension, annoyance, agitation, and disturbance of public peace.” The suspension will remain in effect until 11.59 pm on December 9.

The farmers’ protest has gained momentum as a group of farmers is preparing to march towards Delhi, demanding legislation for a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. In light of these developments, the Ambala district administration has also invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which prohibits any unlawful assembly of five or more people. A ban on all processions, whether on foot or by vehicle, has been enforced until further notice. The authorities have also ordered the closure of all government and private schools in the district.

These measures come as authorities tighten security at the Shambhu Border point, a crucial junction on National Highway-44 connecting Punjab and Haryana. Multilayered barricading has been installed to manage the flow of protesters.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, speaking about the march, referred to the 101 farmers who are preparing to join the protest as “marjeevras,” meaning individuals willing to lay down their lives for the cause. The ongoing protests have stirred significant political debate, with farmers demanding that the government pass legislation guaranteeing MSP, a long-standing issue in the agricultural sector.
