Flying with IndiGo will become more expensive starting March 14 after the airline announced a new fuel surcharge for both domestic and international flights amid rising global oil prices.
The airline said the additional charge will range from ₹425 to ₹2300 per sector, depending on the travel route. The surcharge will come into effect at 00:01 hours on March 14 for all new bookings.
With this move, IndiGo has become the second Indian carrier after Air India to introduce a fuel charge in response to the recent surge in fuel costs.
Fuel Prices Surge Amid West Asia Conflict
The airline said the decision was taken due to a sharp increase in fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Crude oil prices have risen to nearly USD 100 per barrel amid escalating conflict involving United States, Israel and Iran.
According to the International Air Transport Association Jet Fuel Monitor, aviation fuel prices in the region have surged by more than 85 percent, significantly increasing operating costs for airlines.
IndiGo noted that Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) accounts for a large portion of airline expenses, and such a steep price rise directly impacts airline operations and network planning.
Airline Says Full Fare Hike Avoided
In its statement, the airline said it had chosen to introduce a limited fuel surcharge rather than fully passing the entire increase in fuel costs on to passengers through higher ticket prices.
“While offsetting the entire impact of this fuel price surge requires a very substantial adjustment to fares, IndiGo has introduced a relatively smaller amount as a fuel charge, keeping in mind the consequential burden on customers,” the airline said.
Fuel Surcharge Slabs Announced
The airline said the additional fuel surcharge will be applied per sector for new bookings. The charges will vary depending on the destination.
- Domestic India: ₹425
- Indian Subcontinent: ₹425
- Middle East: ₹900
- South East Asia and China: ₹1,800
- Africa and West Asia: ₹1,800
- Europe: ₹2,300
The surcharge will be added to the ticket fare at the time of booking.
Air India Also Introduced Fuel Charge Earlier
Earlier this week, Air India announced a ₹399 fuel surcharge on domestic flight tickets, which came into effect on March 12.
The airline said the revised charges are part of a phased plan and will gradually be extended to international routes as well.
Air India also confirmed that international passengers will face higher surcharges depending on routes and ticket categories, as the airline adjusts fares to manage rising operational costs.
With global energy prices continuing to fluctuate due to the West Asia crisis, aviation analysts believe airlines may introduce further adjustments to fares if fuel prices remain elevated in the coming weeks.
