India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Announced on Guwahati–Howrah Route, Launch Expected Soon

New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday confirmed that Indian Railways is set to roll out its first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, marking a major step forward in long-distance rail travel. The new service will connect Guwahati in Assam with Howrah in West Bengal, strengthening rail connectivity between the Northeast and eastern India.

Addressing railway officials at Rail Bhawan while extending New Year greetings, Vaishnaw said all trial runs, safety tests, and certification processes for the sleeper variant have been successfully completed. With regulatory clearances in place, the train is now ready for passenger operations. The inaugural run is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month.

Describing the project as a milestone for Indian Railways, the minister said the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat platform has been designed specifically for overnight travel, combining speed, comfort, and modern safety standards. He added that 2026 will witness several passenger-focused reforms aimed at upgrading the overall travel experience.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will operate with a 16-coach configuration, comprising 11 three-tier AC coaches, four two-tier AC coaches, and one first-class AC coach, offering seating and sleeping accommodation for around 823 passengers. Railway officials said the timetable will be structured with evening departures and early morning arrivals to suit long-distance commuters.

Built with a new-generation bogie and advanced suspension system, the train promises smoother rides and reduced noise levels. Passenger comfort has been prioritised through ergonomically designed berths, modern interiors, and improved safety features across all coaches.

Key features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper include semi-high-speed capability with a design speed of up to 180 kmph, automatic doors, CCTV surveillance, fire detection and suppression systems, emergency communication facilities, and the KAVACH indigenous train collision avoidance system. Special arrangements have also been made to ensure accessibility for Divyangjan passengers.
