The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has expressed “India’s strong protest” to Germany over its recent remarks concerning the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate. The MEA conveyed its objection to what it perceives as comments undermining the independence of India’s judiciary.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the MEA revealed that a senior German diplomat, the Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi, was summoned to address India’s concerns regarding the remarks made by the spokesperson of the German Foreign Ministry. India views such remarks as interference in its internal affairs and a threat to the independence of its judiciary.

The statement emphasized India’s status as a vibrant democracy with a robust rule of law. It affirmed that, like in all legal cases, the law will follow its due course in Mr. Kejriwal’s matter. The MEA condemned any biased assumptions made in this regard as unwarranted.

George Enzweiler, the Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, was called upon by the Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday to discuss the issue. Enzweiler’s visit to the MEA office in New Delhi’s South Block was noted.

Germany’s reaction to Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest centered on the importance of the presumption of innocence, a fundamental principle of the rule of law. The German Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson underscored the need for fair and impartial treatment for Kejriwal, asserting his entitlement to a full and unrestricted legal defense. The spokesperson emphasized that the presumption of innocence must prevail in his case, echoing the core tenets of democratic principles.
