India to Receive First Batch of Apache AH-64E Helicopters by July 21, Boost to Army’s Combat Power Near Pakistan Border

New Delhi: In a significant development aimed at strengthening India’s aerial firepower, the country is all set to receive the first batch of the advanced Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the United States by July 21, according to reports. These state-of-the-art helicopters, often dubbed as “tanks in the air,” will be a major boost to the Army’s offensive and defensive capabilities.

The first consignment, part of a six-helicopter deal signed during former US President Donald Trump’s visit in 2020, will arrive at the Indian Air Force’s Hindon Air Force Station and are expected to be deployed along the Pakistan border amid heightened tensions following Operation Sindoor.

The delivery of the remaining three helicopters is scheduled for later this year, with all six units to be fully inducted by the end of 2025. Originally slated for delivery in June 2023, the arrival was delayed due to global supply chain disruptions, pushing back the timeline first to December and then to July 2024.

The Apaches will be operated by the 451 Army Aviation Squadron, raised in Jodhpur in early 2023, marking a historic moment as this is the first time the Indian Army will directly operate Apache attack helicopters, which were previously solely under the Indian Air Force (IAF). The IAF had acquired 22 Apache helicopters under a 2015 deal, with all units delivered by July 2020.

The Apache AH-64E is regarded as one of the most lethal and versatile attack helicopters in the world. Equipped with advanced night vision systems, radar-guided Hellfire missiles, hydra rockets, and 30mm chain guns, it can execute precision strikes in both day and night operations. The chopper also features twin-turboshaft engines, tandem cockpits, and tailwheel-type landing gear.

In addition to the Apache deal, the Indian Army is also enhancing its aviation fleet with the signing of a contract for 25 new Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) in March 2024, a move aimed at bolstering logistical and tactical capabilities in high-altitude and border regions.
