Pithoragarh: Following a tragic road accident in the Muwani area of Pithoragarh district that claimed eight lives, the Uttarakhand government has announced financial assistance to the victims’ families. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami declared that the state would provide ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to those injured in the mishap.
The accident occurred near the Suni bridge on Tuesday, when a vehicle carrying 13 passengers veered off the road and crashed, resulting in the deaths of eight people and injuries to several others. Police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and took the injured to a nearby hospital.
CM Dhami took to social media to express his condolences and reaffirm the state’s commitment to support the victims. “Our government stands firmly with the families of the deceased and is committed to providing every possible assistance to the injured,” he posted on X. He further acknowledged the solidarity and support expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying it would give strength to grieving families during this painful time.
In a separate message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the incident and announced an additional ₹2 lakh ex-gratia from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased victim. An amount of ₹50,000 will also be provided to the injured.
“Saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,” read the post from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on X.
The combined compensation from both the central and state governments brings the total financial assistance for the families of the deceased to ₹4 lakh each, and ₹1 lakh for those injured.
