India Sees Dip in Active COVID-19 Cases Amid ‘Mini-Wave’; Experts Urge Caution, Not Panic

New Delhi: India’s COVID-19 situation continues to show encouraging signs of control as active cases dropped by 353 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total active caseload down to 6,483, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). However, the ministry also confirmed four more fatalities, raising the total death toll since May to 10, and 113 since January 2025.

Health authorities clarified that most recent deaths were linked to pre-existing health conditions worsened by the virus, and not due to COVID-19 alone.

Recovery Remains Strong
So far in 2025, 15,945 people have recovered from the virus, reflecting a continued rise in natural immunity and vaccination-led protection. States like Kerala, with 5,572 recoveries, and Delhi, with 2,480 recoveries, lead the recovery chart.

Gujarat currently tops the active caseload with 1,105 ongoing cases and two recent deaths. Meanwhile, Delhi has 620 active cases and 13 fatalities recorded this year. Maharashtra also reported 489 active cases and 31 deaths, although most current cases are reportedly mild.

Encouragingly, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have reported zero active cases, suggesting localized success in containment.

Statewise Snapshot:

  • Andhra Pradesh: 62 active, 198 recoveries
  • Karnataka: 653 active, 1,381 recoveries
  • Rajasthan: 302 active, 208 recoveries
  • Uttar Pradesh: 275 active, 67 recoveries, 2 deaths

Experts: This Is a ‘Mini-Wave’, Not a Resurgence
Leading health experts have termed the current rise in cases a “mini-wave”, suggesting it aligns with seasonal viral behavior, similar to influenza patterns.

“We are not witnessing a resurgence. Instead, these minor surges are expected periodically, much like seasonal flu,” said a senior official at AIIMS. Most patients are recovering at home with mild symptoms, and no spike in hospital admissions has been reported from major cities such as Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi.

Hospitals Prepared, No Overload
Unlike earlier waves, hospitals are now better prepared and are not under pressure. The majority of recent infections are being managed on an outpatient basis.
