India Reasserts: ‘No Talks Until Pakistan Ends Terror Support, Vacates PoK’ — MEA Sends Firm Message Amid Sharif’s Peace Pitch

New Delhi: India on Thursday reaffirmed its uncompromising stand on engaging with Pakistan, stating clearly that talks will not resume until Pakistan stops sponsoring cross-border terrorism and vacates the Pakistan-occupied territories of Jammu and Kashmir. The statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) comes just days after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed a willingness for peace talks with India during his visit to Iran.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “As far as our engagement with Pakistan is concerned, our stand has been clear. Any engagement has to be bilateral. We would like to reiterate that terrorism and talks cannot go together. They need to hand over to India noted terrorists, whose records and list we submitted to them some years ago.”

Jaiswal made it clear that the only dialogue India is prepared for on Jammu and Kashmir pertains to the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to India. “Talks on Jammu and Kashmir will only happen when Pakistan vacates PoK and hands over the territory to us,” he asserted.

India has also placed the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The MEA reiterated that the treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan “credibly and irrevocably” ends its support for terrorism. “Just like PM Narendra Modi says, terror and talks cannot go together, terror and trade cannot go together, and water and blood cannot flow together,” Jaiswal added.

The renewed firmness in India’s diplomatic position follows a decisive military response in the form of Operation Sindoor. In retaliation for the Pahalgam terror strike, India launched precision strikes targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. The operation led to a four-day military escalation, during which Indian forces reportedly hit 11 Pakistani air bases on the intervening night of May 9 and 10, just hours before a ceasefire was announced.
