India Hold Firm in T20Is; Australia Dominate Tests and Women’s Formats in Latest ICC Rankings Update

Mumbai: The latest annual update from the International Cricket Council has once again underlined two defining themes in world cricket — India’s continued dominance in men’s T20Is and Australia’s enduring control across formats, particularly in Tests and women’s cricket.

Men’s T20Is: India Stay on Top

India have retained the No.1 position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings with 275 rating points, maintaining a 13-point lead over second-placed England. The rankings reflect the consistency India have displayed in the shortest format over the past two years.

Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India created history by becoming the first team to successfully defend the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2026 after lifting the trophy in 2024. Significantly, the side has also remained unbeaten in bilateral T20I series during this period.

Australia occupy third place with 258 points, while New Zealand (247), South Africa (244), Pakistan (240), and the West Indies (233) complete the top seven.

Bangladesh have climbed to eighth position with 225 points, pushing Sri Lanka down to ninth after a drop in rating points. Emerging sides such as the United States have also made noticeable progress, reflecting the expanding reach and competitiveness of the format.

Australia Continue to Lead Test Cricket

Australia lead the ICC Test rankings while India continue to dominate the men’s T20I standings.

Australia remain the No.1 side in the ICC Men’s Test Rankings with 131 points, reinforcing their sustained dominance in red-ball cricket. Their strong performances over the last year, including an impressive Ashes campaign, have widened the gap at the top.

South Africa are placed second with 119 points following their World Test Championship triumph, while India have moved into third place with 104 points, narrowly ahead of England on 102.

Despite suffering a rare home defeat during the cycle, India’s overall consistency ensured an upward movement in the rankings.

Further down the table, Pakistan have overtaken Sri Lanka to move into sixth position, while the West Indies and Bangladesh complete the top tier. Ireland have dropped out of the rankings after failing to meet the minimum match criteria required for qualification.

Australia Extend Dominance in Women’s Cricket

Australia continue to dominate women’s cricket rankings, while India remain among the top sides in both ODI and T20I formats.

If one pattern remains unmistakable in women’s cricket, it is Australia’s continued supremacy across formats.

Australia remain No.1 in both women’s ODI and T20I cricket. In the ODI rankings, they lead comfortably with 163 points, ahead of England (128) and India (126).

South Africa, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka retain their positions within the top six, highlighting a relatively stable upper order in the women’s game.

The T20I rankings present a similar picture. Australia lead with 287 points, followed by England on 275 and India on 264. Defending champions New Zealand are fourth, while South Africa and the West Indies complete the top six.

However, the competition beneath the leading sides continues to tighten. Sri Lanka trail the West Indies by just a single point, while Ireland and Bangladesh remain separated by only one point in ninth and tenth positions respectively.

The annual update for the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings is scheduled to be released on May 7.

How the Rankings Work

India’s Smriti Mandhana remains among the leading batters in women’s cricket across formats.

The annual rankings update assigns full weightage (100 per cent) to matches played since May 2025, while results from the previous two years carry a 50 per cent weighting.

The system is designed to reward recent performances while also recognising consistency over a longer cycle.

A Familiar Yet Evolving Hierarchy

India’s Abhishek Sharma and Virat Kohli feature prominently in the latest ICC batting rankings update.

While the latest update brings minor positional changes, the broader hierarchy in international cricket remains largely intact.

India’s command over men’s T20 cricket continues to set the benchmark in the format, while Australia’s strength across Tests and women’s cricket reflects the depth and structure of their system.

At the same time, the steady rise of developing nations such as the USA and Italy in T20Is points towards a slowly expanding competitive landscape.

Yet, at the summit of world cricket, the balance of power remains largely unchanged — for now.
