New Delhi: India is in discussions with Russia for the supply of additional S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems, according to TASS, citing Dmitry Shugayev, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation. India already operates the S-400 systems, and talks are underway for new deliveries. The country had signed a $5.5 billion deal in 2018 for five units, but repeated delays have pushed the delivery of the last two systems to 2026 and 2027. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised India for resisting US pressure to curb purchases from Russia, highlighting the ongoing defence partnership.
Russia remains India’s largest arms supplier, accounting for 36% of Indian weapons imports between 2020 and 2024, despite growing acquisitions from France and Israel, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. India and Russia have a long history of collaboration, including licensed production of T-90 tanks and Su-30MKI jets, supply of MiG-29 aircraft and Kamov helicopters, the construction of aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, production of AK-203 rifles, and the joint development of the BrahMos missile programme. The S-400 system also played a critical role during Operation Sindoor, helping the Indian Army intercept incoming missiles during strikes against Pakistan.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, reaffirming their “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.” The meeting occurred shortly after the US imposed 50% tariffs on Indian exports, including a 25% additional duty linked to India’s purchase of Russian crude. The discussions focused on cooperation across economic, financial, energy, and defence sectors, with Modi emphasizing that India and Russia have always stood “shoulder-to-shoulder even in the most difficult situations.” Both leaders also underscored the importance of global peace and stability, with Modi welcoming efforts to end hostilities in Ukraine. The informal engagement included a 45-minute journey together to the meeting venue, signaling a strong personal rapport between the two leaders.
