Bengaluru: Kannada actor Ranya Rao, arrested in a high-profile gold smuggling case, has made shocking allegations of physical and mental torture during her custody. In a letter to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), the actor claimed she was framed, repeatedly slapped, denied food, and forced to sign blank documents under duress.
Ranya, the daughter of a senior police officer, was arrested at Bengaluru airport with gold bars worth ₹12.56 crore hidden in a waist belt. However, she now claims that she was arrested inside the aircraft itself, without being allowed to explain her side.
“From the moment of my arrest, I was slapped 10-15 times by officers. I refused to sign their statements, but under immense pressure and physical assault, I was forced to sign 50-60 typed pages and around 40 blank pages,” her letter read.
The allegations come just days after a special Bengaluru court denied her bail, extending her judicial custody. Ranya further claimed that a DRI officer threatened to expose her father’s identity if she didn’t cooperate, despite him having no involvement in the case.
She also stated that she was deliberately denied sleep and food from 6:45 PM on March 3 to 7:50 PM on March 4.
In a surprising turn, Ranya has now questioned the legitimacy of the case, claiming no gold was recovered from her and that individuals from Delhi, posing as officers, falsely implicated her to protect the real culprits.
However, her statements have been inconsistent. On March 7, in her first official confession, Ranya admitted to smuggling and acknowledged that 17 gold bars were recovered from her. Later, on March 10, she broke down in court, claiming verbal abuse but denied being physically assaulted.
