Washington: In an unexpected twist ahead of the Nobel Peace Prize announcement, former U.S. President Donald J. Trump expressed his approval of the 2024 prize being awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, while making headlines with his signature self-assured remarks.

Machado, widely regarded as Venezuela’s “Iron Lady” for her tireless work promoting democratic rights, received the Nobel Peace Prize this year. Trump, speaking in his characteristic candid style, said, “The person who got the Nobel Prize called me today and said, ‘I am accepting this in your honour because you deserved it,’ a very nice thing to do.”

The 79-year-old former president, who has long touted his own contributions to international diplomacy, also claimed that he had been instrumental behind the scenes: “I have been helping her along the way… I am happy because I saved millions of lives. They need a lot of help in Venezuela; it’s a basic disaster.”

Trump’s comments came amid the White House criticizing the Nobel Committee for allegedly favoring “politics over peace” by awarding Machado instead of him, noting that he had campaigned for the prize for his efforts in resolving multiple conflicts. With a cheeky smile, Trump added, “I did not say then, ‘Give it to me,’ though I think she might have. She was very nice.” The remark drew laughter from journalists and attendees alike.

He also hinted at his ambitions for future recognition, noting, “You could also say it was given out for 2024 and I was running for office in 2024.”
