New Delhi: One of Delhi’s most iconic properties — the first official residence of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru — has reportedly changed hands in one of the capital’s biggest real estate transactions. The sprawling bungalow, located at 17 York Road (now Motilal Nehru Marg) in the prestigious Lutyens’ Bungalow Zone (LBZ), is believed to have been sold for around ₹1,100 crore.

Sources suggest that the property was initially listed for nearly ₹1,400 crore, but negotiations brought the final settlement down. The buyer is understood to be a prominent businessman from India’s beverage sector, though the identity has not been officially disclosed. A reputed law firm overseeing the deal has already issued a public notice asking anyone with claims to the property to step forward within seven days.

The current owners, Rajkumari Kakkar and Beena Rani, are connected to a royal lineage from Rajasthan. Spread across 14,973 square meters (approximately 3.7 acres), with a built-up area of nearly 24,000 square feet, the bungalow is among the most coveted private residences in Delhi.

Situated in the heart of LBZ — designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century — the area is home to around 3,000 bungalows, most of which are government-occupied by ministers, judges, and top officials. About 600, however, remain in private hands, often owned by India’s wealthiest families.
